Closing out the month of January on their home floor back on Monday the 28th, Vienna Lady Eagle basketball looked to even their record in the Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) taking on Viburnum’s Lady Blue Jays in Maries County.

Trailing 24-21 at halftime, the Lady Eagles outscored Viburnum 34-21 to post a 55-45 victory over the visitors from Iron County.

Seeing scoring from five different players in the opening eight minutes, Vienna led Viburnum 13-8 going into the second quarter.

Kamryn Hayes paced the Lady Eagles with four points in the first quarter followed by three from Jordyn Steffen and two each from Karissa Feeler, Kadence George and Jena Schwartze.

Doubled up 16-8 to close the first half, Vienna saw themselves trailing the visitors from Viburnum at halftime 24-21.

Opening the second half, Vienna was able to return the favor outscoring Viburnum 16-5 in the third quarter to take a 37-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

Edging the Lady Blue Jays 18-16 in the final eight minutes, the Lady Eagles put their first notch in the GVC win column with a victory over the visitors from Iron County.

Held to three first-half points, Steffen finished the game with a double double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. She was followed in double figures by George with 10 points and six rebounds.

Vienna nearly had two more Lady Eagles finish with double doubles.

Feeler finished with nine points, seven rebounds, four assists and a steal. Hayes also just missed a double double by two points finishing with eight points and 11 rebounds.

Schwartze added six points followed closely by four points each from Marsie Messersmith and Renee Logan.

Kendra Iven rounded out the Vienna scoring in varsity action with a fourth-quarter free throw for one point.

In the junior-varsity contest, 10 was a good number as the JV Lady Eagles defeated Viburnum’s JV Lady Blue Jays 48-29.

Holding Viburnum to six first-half points, Vienna saw all seven players score during the JV game.

Jena Wiles, Allie Zimmer and Schwartze all scored 10 points to lead the JV Lady Eagles.

Logan chipped in seven points followed closely by six from Autumn Smith.

Rachel Garro scored three second-quarter points while Messersmith hit a pair of free throws for two points.

Wiles added 10 rebounds giving her a double double for the JV Lady Eagles.

Garro recorded a team-high four steals while Messersmith and Logan both dished out two assists sharing team-high honors in that statistical category.

Mother Nature had her say on the schedule last week with inclement weather in the area Friday night postponing Vienna’s GVC showdown with Bourbon’s Lady Warhawks to this coming Friday night at Vienna High School beginning at 5:30 p.m., with the junior varsity contest.

Less than 24 hours later, Vienna will open the MSHSAA Class 2, District 8 Tournament in Laquey on Saturday against Richland at approximately 3 p.m.
