Three truck loads of trash picked up during Gasconade River Clean-Up Challenge

Three truckloads of trash were picked up during the Gasconade River Clean-Up Challenge on Saturday.

The clean-up was promoted by Operation Clean Up Maries County, formerly known as the county’s trash patrol program. The clean up program is under the direction of the Maries County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Chris Heitman said about 55 people attended and picked up a lot of trash. People came from near and far to help clean up the beautiful Gasconade River by walking along the river bank, or from boats and canoes. There were a number of scuba divers also.

The most interesting piece of trash, the sheriff said, was the blower from an old (1970s) salon hairdryer, which was found by Dalton Avery of Fulton. Greg and Lois Mihalebich of Jefferson City, picked up the most trash. They were in a canoe and cleaned up and piled about a truck load of trash on the river bank, where it was marked with a flag and picked up and hauled away by others, and the couple also filled their canoe and brought the trash in.

A BBQ was held later at Indian Ford, with the BBQ donated by Ron Knoll and Walmart.

Sheriff Heitman said they plan to hold the river clean-up again in September 2019.
