Maries R-2 middle school becoming MSHSAA affiliate versus sponsored school

Superintendent Dr. Lenice Basham told the Maries R-2 Board of Education July 25 that the athletic director and coaches are concerned about the lack of middle school athletes coming up.

“Middle school coaches and the athletic director are concerned there are not going to be enough seventh-graders coming up for middle school sports,” said Basham. “They have made a proposal that we become Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) affiliated rather than MSHSAA approved.”

The difference is a variation in the wording, and would allow sixth-graders to play on the seventh- and eighth-grade teams.

“They get to play for three years versus only two years that a MSHSAA sponsor would require,” Basham said.

Director Tom Kinsey asked if the students would still play MSHSAA schools. Eric Logan, a coach and athletic director, addressed him. Logan said they would still play MSHSAA schools and still play the same rules. The difference is mainly that sixth-graders would be allowed to play.

“It would just be junior high, it would not affect high school,” said Logan.

Basham said they already have an insurance policy that they purchase for all students who play MSHSAA sports.

“It doesn’t cost us any more to become affiliated,” Basham said.

Kinsey made a motion to approve. The board passed the measure with all in favor.

In other business, the board was asked to surplus a piece of property on Mitchem Avenue.

“The property where Wilma Beckenberg lived has been purchased and that owner would like us to surplus the property lot next to him for purchase,” Basham said. “It is the lot between 106 and 201 on Mitchem Avenue.”

Basham said the land is wet and stays wet.

“It’s down the street from the VFW,” Kinsey said. “It’s across from the land we bought from Jeff Maples.”

Kinsey said the whole area stays wet.

“Right now, all I am asking you to do is declare it surplus property,” Basham said. “Then my request will be in closed session for you to decide (a) minimum bid.”

Kinsey said that was fine, but they had tried before and never received any offers. The board declared the property on Mitchem Avenue surplus.
