Icy conditions close Interstate 44 east of Rolla on Sunday

ROLLA — Icy conditions Sunday afternoon resulted in one fatality and several injuries in a 12-vehicle accident along Interstate 44 east of Rolla Sunday afternoon.

Deborah L. Anderson, 63, of Ballwin, Mo., was traveling eastbound at 2:55 p.m. in a 2008 Nissan Rouge when traffic came to a stop at mile marker 138.2 behind an injury crash ahead. 

While trying to break, Anderson was the third vehicle in line and struck the driver side of a 2018 Kenworth tractor-trailer and the rear of a 2015 Volvo tractor trailer. Her vehicle was totaled.

Anderson was pronounced dead on the scene at 3 p.m. by Laclede County Coroner Steve Murrell, and taken to Shadles Funeral Home in Lebanon. This is Troop I’s second fatality for February and for 2018.

In the same incident, Meta resident Bryan A. Mitchell, 34, was traveling in a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. Mitchell was the eighth vehicle in line and struck the rear of a 2017 Volvo tractor-trailer and the right side of a 2016 Ford Fusion. He was then struck in the rear by a 2011 Hyundai Sonata and a 2012 Freightliner. His vehicle was totaled.

Mitchell received moderate injuries and was transported by Mercy Ambulance to Mercy Hospital Lebanon.

A separate six-vehicle accident at 2:20 p.m. east of Rolla resulted in two Rolla residents injured. 

Pitts S. Lesesne, 57, and occupant Paula D. Lesesne, 53, were traveling eastbound in a 2012 Chrysler Minivan when they stopped in traffic. They were the fourth vehicle in line when a 2013 Volvo tractor-trailer lost control on the snow-covered roadway and they were then struck from behind by a 2013 Ram pickup truck and a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica.

Pitts S. Lesesne had moderate injuries and Paula D. Lesesne had serious injuries. They were transported by Phelps County Ambulance to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. 

A three-vehicle accident at 3:45 p.m. was located at mile marker 137.8 and resulted in injuries to two Rolla residents. 

Kayce C. Smith, 33, and Griffen Smith, 13, were occupants traveling eastbound in a 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Jimi E. Smith, 46, also of Rolla. 

Smith’s vehicle was stopped in traffic for a pervious crash, along with a 1999 Ford Econoline, when they were struck in the rear by a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado.

Both occupants received moderate injuries and were transported to Mercy Hospital Lebanon. 

A total of 43 vehicles were involved in seven different incidents between 2:20 and 3:45 p.m. Sunday.
