The Missouri Department of Natural Resources on Jan. 17 submitted a 180-day extension to the Surface Transportation Board, which oversees railroads and abandoned rail lines, request additional time to reach an agreement with Missouri Central Railroad Company on the transfer of the Rock Island Railroad.
DNR, which has received four previous extensions, requested the deadline of Feb. 21 be extended to Aug. 20.
If the line being donated by Ameren eventually becomes the Rock Island Trail, the 144-mile stretch would create a state-wide trail, and would connect with the Katy Trail.
A closer look at the impact this change may have on local landowners will appear next week.
