Courthouse employees host party to celebrate three who are retiring

It was a festive event at the courthouse on Friday to celebrate the retirement of three long-serving county employees.

People came to the open house that celebrated the upcoming retirement of county employees Terry Schwartze, Ray Schwartze, and Debbie Stokes. There was good food, music, and a lot of people to visit with.

The three soon-to-be retired county employees all were given plaques that noted their service to Maries County. Presiding Commissioner Ray Schwartze said thanks for the 12 years he has worked as a county commissioner. He also thanked his wife of over 40 years, June Schwartze, who was present at the open house.

Prosecuting Attorney Terry Schwartze, who has been prosecutor for 16 years, said the courthouse employees are a good group of people she has come to know over the years and they are her friends. She said she enjoys working at the courthouse with them and is pleased to have the retirement party.

Debbie Stokes, a senior court clerk who has worked at the courthouse for 27 years, said the 27 years were good ones. She worked with good judges and good people, but she is ready to retire. Joining her at the open house were her children, Sarah Stokes and Joe Stokes, and a friend Tommy Pickering.

John Viessman of the Historical Society of Maries County, provided a historical display in the front foyer with photos of the courthouse and the square. He also gave tours, detailing the courthouse artwork.

Don Brunnert, Wayne Helton, Don Davis and Frank Platt provided some really nice musical entertainment with a bit of humor thrown in here and there.

The courthouse offices each provided food, which was enjoyed by many.
