Mick Byrd’s Vienna Eagle softball team added four more wins to their victory total last week beginning with a 12-2 victory in five innings last Tuesday over Cuba to open defense of their Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) softball crown from last year.

Alexi Struemph paced the Vienna offense against Cuba with three hits, two runs batted in (RBI) and a stolen base.

Marsie Messersmith also had a multi-hit game with two hits, a stolen base and a RBI.

Jordyn Steffen helped her own cause against Cuba with a team-high three RBIs.

In the circle, she allowed just five hits and two walks while recording four strikeouts of Cuba batters.

Vienna’s JV Eagles dropped their GVC opener by a score of 8-6 in Cuba.

“Our varsity kids played a fine game against Cuba,” Byrd said. “Jordyn came out in that first inning firing bullets. That set the tone for the whole game.”

Two days later on their home field, Dixon’s Lady Bulldogs paid a visit to Maries County.

Looking for their eighth win in a row to start the season, Vienna accomplished the feat with an 8-2 victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

Struemph and Karissa Feeler each recorded three hits to lead the Eagle offense. Collecting two hits each were Rachel Garro, Alicia Long, Jada Kleffner and Messersmith.

Vienna’s JV Eagles completed the sweep of Dixon with an 8-1 win highlighted by a two-run home run over the left-field fence off the bat of Molly Otto.

Hosting Newburg Friday afternoon, Vienna easily improved to 9-0 with a 23-2 victory over the visiting Wolves.

Long had two this and four RBIs while Feeler and Messersmith both recorded two hits and three RBIs.

Prior to the game, Vienna recognized their youth softball teams.

“We enjoyed recognizing our little girls softball teams and it was fun to watch all 20 of our players play in a varsity game,” Byrd said.

Monday night, Vienna had revenge on the brain with Calvary Lutheran’s Lady Lions in town.

Even though Calvary Lutheran ended Vienna’s season last year, Vienna avenged the loss with a 4-1 victory to improve their impressive record to 10-0 on the season.

Gabby Wilkinson, Kleffner and Feeler each had two hits to lead the Eagle offensive attack.

Held scoreless through four innings, Vienna got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Steffen laced a two-run single to right field scoring Wilkinson and Long putting the Eagles ahead for good.

In addition to what turned out to be the game-winning hit, Steffen threw a complete-game victory allowing no earned runs on just one hit and one walk to go along with one strikeout.

Last night (Tuesday), Vienna defeated Laquey 15-0 to improve to 11-0 on the season.
